Trips around the wedding
Planning the honeymoon
The honeymoon is the one trip the two of you own outright. It does not need to be decided early. Decide it in the order below.
AirConxt is our trip planner. It opens in a new tab. Start a wedding plan on OurNave to keep these three trips on the same checklist as the rest of the wedding.
In order
What to decide, in order
Agree what kind of trip this is
Rest, moving around, or one of each. Have the conversation before you look at anywhere, because two people who each assumed the other wanted the opposite will not agree on a destination.
Set a number, kept apart from the wedding budget
Give the trip its own figure and its own line. Keep it separate from the wedding total so a venue overage does not eat it.
Decide how long you can actually be away
Check leave with both employers before you look at anywhere. Decide the length first, then the destination.
Check documents and entry requirements
Passport expiry, whether either name is changing before you travel, and what the destination asks of arriving visitors. Sort this before booking, not after.
Choose the destination and the dates
Leaving the morning after the wedding is a choice, not a rule. A gap of a few days is easier on both of you.
Book flights and the first nights of lodging
Lock the fixed points first: how you get there, and where you sleep the first few nights. Everything after that can move.
Build the day to day plan
Only once the fixed points are booked. Leave more empty space than feels right. You will both be tired.
Tell the people who need to know
Your photographer, your venue coordinator and whoever is handling anything after the wedding all need your travel dates, and someone at home should have your itinerary.
Owners
Who does what
OurNave keeps each of these as a task you can assign, so the reminder reaches the person who owns it instead of the couple.
- The couple
- Everything on this page. The honeymoon is the one trip nobody else can decide for you, and it stays on the couple's own checklist.
- Whoever is helping with the wedding
- Nothing, by design. Do not hand this one out. Hand out the tasks that have deadlines other people can meet.
- The person minding things at home
- Give one person your itinerary, your flight details and a way to reach you, and tell your vendors to contact them and not you while you are away.
Timing
When it happens
Everything below is counted back from your wedding date, which is how the OurNave checklist schedules it.
- About eight months before the wedding
- Your OurNave checklist raises Plan and book the honeymoon here.
- The months after that
- Destination, dates, flights and the first nights of lodging. The task stays open until those are booked.
- The last month
- The day to day plan, packing, and handing your itinerary to someone at home.
